About us - Our Story

Meraki Cakes is a small family-owned Christchurch business that specializes in custom orders and wedding cakes! We are primarily a phone and web based business, with hopes of a retail shop somewhere in the near future. Whilst we have use of a Council registered kitchen, we do not have a shop front nor do we have any premade cakes for sale.

Owners Jo Corkery and Exiquel Ogena live in Christchurch with their beautiful family. Between them they have over 30 years experience in hospitality and professional kitchens. Jo has been providing the Chch area with bespoke cakes for the last 10 years. Everything that leaves the kitchen is baked and decorated from scratch- no packet mixes or artificial flavourings. We only use quality products, sourced locally whenever we can.

"I stared decorating cakes when my daughter was born, I wanted to be able to create beautiful birthday cakes for her. My love for baking started much earlier. I was 13 when I started my first job in a professional kitchen, I enjoyed helping with desserts (especially cheesecakes)!  Over the years I challenged myself with classes from international cake artists and chocolatiers. I just sort of gravitated towards it- it is a great creative outlet. That's why I called it 'Meraki', it means to leave a part of yourself in your work/do something with soul. I've got to make many birthday cakes since, wedding cakes, baby shower cakes, every cake has a feel good element to it. Like your part of someone's happiness. That's the aim here, enjoy what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." - Jo
